Tom is the old man of Complete Value Investor, beginning his investing career as a teenager in 1968 with two shares of Ford Motor. His value investing orientation is heavily influenced by his parents' experience of the Crash of '29 and Great Depression and his own in the other two great bubbles, the 1960s Go-Go Years and 1999-2000.

Tom manages the value-oriented Margin of Safety Portfolio, his own real-money retirement account. He tries to buy dollars of value for fifty cents--businesses selling for significant discounts to intrinsic value--with the goal of avoiding permanent loss of capital with the potential for market-beating returns.

Tom brings to his analysis real-world knowledge, from starting his first business in high school (at 15, he was youngest club owner and certified director in American Contract Bridge League history--what a geek!) to careers as a teacher, lawyer and analyst, living all over the U.S. and abroad. As Senior Analyst at The Motley Fool, where he co-managed its High Growth portfolio and picked stocks for the newsletter TMF Select, Tom selected top performers. He chose the number one winners in TMF's annual guides the last two years before he left to start CVI (then CGI) and holds the #2 performing stock for TMF's Hidden Gems.

In late 2003, Tom (and CVI co-founder Jeff Fischer, who were the top most-read TMF writers) said goodbye to the endless marketing of the newsletter factory world to be independent.

In addition to his investing commentary on CVI, Tom's biotech investing analysis for many years appeared monthly in the journal Nature Biotechnology. He has appeared on CNN, Fox News Channel, The Motley Fool Radio Show, and many other radio outlets, as well as in Newsweek and other print publications. For several years he was the MarketWatch analyst on Washington's Fox TV affiliate (and will never again get up Mondays at 4:45 AM). His regularly delights audiences with his insights, clarity and sense of humor. He believes investing should be fun.

Tom earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Cornell University and his law degree at the University of Chicago. He lives with his partner, the artist Vilis Inde, in the minimalist art mecca Marfa, Texas, where Vilis runs inde/jacobs fine art. Tom can be seen around Marfa with their dog, Clifford.
