Rentech: Homegrown Synthetic Fuel On the Near Horizon [view article]
bobjou, i think its b/c CTL is only competitive if $/oil bbl is about $60-70/bbl. back in the 70's what was it, except for the oil shock, like 20$/bbl or something? Aug 11 10:42 AMRentech: Homegrown Synthetic Fuel On the Near Horizon [view article]
The main hitches are:1) Heat comes from natural gas, which is subject to considerable price variation. If RTK would use solar PV and electic arc or something to produce heat, it would be more attractive.
2) Coal is used for electricity generation. The Fischer-Tropsch CTL process is about 70% efficient. One barrel of oil requires about 192kg of coal to to be produced usin CTL. This means we need a daily 4.4 billion kg increase to current coal output in order to meet 23 million bbl/day completely from coal. This is a very large increase in daily coal output, and challenging to meet.
Of course, a combined GTL, CTL, Wind, Solar, Biogas, Algae fuel will better address the petroleum crisis, and we probably will not rely solely on CTL.
But! CTL is expensive b/c 1) we need coal for power plants, 2) mining operations would need to be significantly increased to meet a new demand, 3) mining is polluting
But RTK is probably a good buy at this price...looking down the road.

What would bring me out to vote is if either candidate claimed they would support:1) Polywell Fusion Research at EMC2
2) Coal to Liquid Technology (across the board)
America has lots of coal, it can be converted to petroleum with about 70% efficiency, and costs about 2X what oil does to produce.
As far as hydrocarbons go, 40 yrs of oil left globally, America has coal. Why not increase mining rate and use the coal? Environmentally dirty...so clean it up. Treat mining waste like nuclear waste.
I was hyped about Algal biopetroleum...then i found that it currently costs about $1,600.00/bbl to produce.
We have no patch to replace oil at present. Our best bet, America, is to use what we have: COAL. Aug 06 08:01 AM

Oil will fluctuate, maybe it dips below 100 in the short-term. Ultimately, its non-renewable, 'civilization' has about 40yrs left of oil in the ground. If we don't develop algal fuels or some hydrocarbon substitute, practically everything falls apart. I highly doubt it will get that bad...since we are holding a solution with the algae. On financials, on hope they keep dropping cause my shorts are around my ankles after this fucking rally. wow...vpratt. you've got some faith in randomness.well, Kailing, how about volatility in oil prices...yes they are down now, but for how long?
also, speaking of clean energy, the only viable hydrocarbon substitute as far as i can tell, is algal fuel. what about those companies? Jul 28 08:36 AM
Struggling AMD Is Still Searching for Inspiration [view article]
hm... LSD... wow. have you ever seen Pirates of Silicon Valley? remaining marxists?!?! here's a lesson from the Communist Manifesto ~ the income tax is one of the planks of a communist society. Gee, you live as a quasi-marxist and weren't even aware of it!well, as far as AMD goes, it could become a penny stock. not sure about $1, damn, but $3...quite possible...ironic that the "teraflop barrier broken" headline came just before a near 50% drop in share price...And what of the barrier being broken...? not a word since the initial announcement...wtf? Very little looks bullish right now, and I believe AMD simply fell with the market. Companies perceived as crappy are dumped first in bearish times. AMD needs to start over, meaning no new announcements until the product is 100% OK and ready to ship the next week, stop fighting Intel and just make a better product, and bring in some fresh blood to management. And selling ATI may not be a bad idea as someone mentioned.
Acquisition does seem possible, big up Tuttle.

Dollar Hurt by Geopolitical Concerns and High Oil [view article]
? backwards, again. Jul 11 10:57 AMHow Far Could Oil Prices Fall? [view article]
man... Oil is affected by the USD - correct BruTra. A weak dollar means more expensive oil for most of the world. And they may only take that for so long...However, Oil is LIMITED in SUPPLY. simple. We will see increases when Iraq comes into play, coastlines, coal to liquid, hell maybe algae will fix the whole problem.
But for now, right now, Oil is quite probably going to at least 160 this year with equivalent disruptions in indexes heavily dependent on petroleum products (Dow first, NASDAQ later...any thoughts?)
Why do so few think about supply and demand when it comes to Oil? Jul 10 09:23 PM
