  • Year-End Buyouts: Big Challenges for the Big Banks
Besides being "Too big to fail" Bank of America has proven "Too big to offer anything resembling good customer service"
Furthermore, these large banks are stealing from taxpayers. Boycott them, close your accounts with the large banks and open accounts with small banks and credit unions.

  • The roots of the crisis did not grow within the financial system alone, Henry Paulson tells the FT in a valedictory interview. Super-abundant savings from fast-growing emerging nations put downward pressure on yields and risk spreads everywhere, he says - implying future crises can only be avoided through global co-operation.
There is some quality finger pointing for you. I wonder if Henry is considering running for an elected office in the future. He appears to be practicing some of the prerequisite skills.

  • JP Morgan Initiates Coverage on Wireless Tower Companies
    I like this business.
I believe demand for tower space will grow as end customers continue with a couple of key trends.
    1) ditching the land line and making all calls wireless
    2) expanding the role of the wireless phone into web browsing, file downloading and other applications that will increase the need for greater data capacity. carriers will have to add infill sites, add antennas to existing sites.

An infrastructure trend worth mentioning. Some carriers, most notably, Clearwire, are ditching the leased T1 lines and using microwave dishes for data backhaul. That is revenue lost by the local phone company and gained by the tower landlord.
The shift of resources continues to flow into wireless telecom and wireless internet. Just look at the FCC's taking of bandwidth from television broadcasting to wireless telecom.

  • The Return of Lending: Still Distant
Individuals and small business should close their accounts with large banks and open new accounts with smaller community banks and credit unions. You have a better chance of establishing a relationship and obtaining financing with a smaller lending institution. I recently opened an account with a credit union and I will be closing my account with BofA in the near future.

  • Crown Castle and the Tower Operators: The Foundation for Next-Gen Wireless
CCI processes applications quicker than AMT. The carriers want their sites on air as quick as possible. AMT customer service is decent and used to be the best but has slowly gotten worse and fallen behind CCI. When you have a search ring and you can choose between collocating on AMT or CCI I'm going to recommend my client chooses the CCI tower. I don't think AMT is a bad company, I just think CCI is better from a customer service standpoint. They are easier to work with, return calls quicker, more efficient process, etc,. Sometimes you can't get AMT to return a call. CCI has aggressively expanded AND improved their customer service at the same time. I am impressed by that. I admit This is only one aspect of the company but I wanted to add my two cents because of my past experience working with both companies.

  • Crown Castle and the Tower Operators: The Foundation for Next-Gen Wireless
    Joe,
    Nice article

    Nathan,
I think most of the risk would be borne by the company generating the signal (carrier) or the antenna manufacturer not the owner of the steel (tower company) Additionally, I would imagine the lawsuits would generally target the deeper pockets (carriers). Furthermore, radio stations have been generating much more powerful wireless signals for much longer and to my knowledge they have not been successfully sued for damages resulting from RF radiation.

    All,
The biggest risk with CCI is the eventual bankruptcy of Sprint Nextel. All of those global signal towers acquired were once upon a time owned by Sprint. So it follows that Sprint antennas will be located on almost all of the former Global Signal towers. When Sprint Nextel goes belly up all of that lease revenue goes away. You can't enforce a lease on a bankrupt lessee.

I have professional experience negotiating and placing antennas on all of the tower companies facilities for all of the carriers and Crown Castle is the best tower company. After I quit working on developing wireless infrastructure I made one investment in wireless telecom and that was a long position in CCI.

  • Ethanol: Our Answer to Reducing U.S. Dependence on Foreign Oil
    Dave W:
Corn is a type of grass.

    Tim:
Sugarcane based ethanol is a far superior choice to corn based ethanol. We can import it from Central and South American countries.

Of course Barack Obama supports corn based ethanol. He answers to the Acher Daniels Midland company and he is from a corn producing state, Illinois.

  • Forget $100 a Barrel - Oil Will Plummet to $30
    The comment:

"The United States is leading an alternative energy charge that will spread throughout the globe and cause a major shift of power away from the Middle East."

shows the authors ignorance. Brazil leads the world in developing ethanol, Denmark in wind power, Germany in solar power. The US does not lead the world in any kind of economically viable alternative energy.

  • Oil, Gas, Electric Cars, the Market and the Economy
    Dr. No

Yes, I think we should import sugarcane based ethanol from Brazil. If the US removed the import tariff on imported ethanol, other countries with suitable climates would be incentivized to grown sugarcane to produce ethanol. I think India, Central and South American countries would be, in general, better trade partners than middle east countries. The goal should be to diversify energy sources. Ultimately cars in the US could be powered by a combination of fuels. Some electricity produced domestically, some domestic and imported ethanol, some domestic and imported gasoline.

Sugarcane based ethanol is 5 times more efficient than corn based ethanol. Sugarcane based ethanol is a partial solution to a huge problem. We still need to reduce energy consumption while diversifying energy sources. Telecommute more, improve public transportation, etcetera. There is no one solution but I'm tired of sugarcane based ethanol being put in the same category as corn based ethanol.

Not all ethanol is created equal. Corn based ethanol is counter productive. It is forced on American consumers because of politics/special interest that are relevant to the US market only.

Sugarcane based ethanol is a viable supplement.
