Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

Credit Card Breakdown: AmEx Disappoints, as Predicted
Credit Card Breakdown: AmEx Disappoints, as Predicted
And yes... ALL stocks now matter what sector, will have highs and lows..it's one big roller-coaster ride.
Credit Card Breakdown: AmEx Disappoints, as Predicted
I know 90% of the people here understand this but let me re-state it.
1. Visa and MasterCard are in the Services sector. American Express is in the Financial sector. Apples and Oranges.
2. Visa and MA will NEVER turn into a credit issuer as a previous poster suggested, they will never be worried about whether someone defaults on their credit or pays on time.
3. As a poster here pointed out, Amex is experiencing huge amounts of large credit line defaults - again, an issue V or MA will never have to deal with.
4. "Although charge-offs are picking up recently, that's not a big deal, these losses can be offset by hiking overall rates on customers, or hiking fees on Merchants" - mojo
- Yeah... and the consumers are just going to rush right out and apply for Amex because they want to pay the extraordinary fees that won't amount to a drop in the bucket in terms of making up for the huge charge-offs and credit defaults Amex is dealing with now.
5. I'm pretty sure I won't look back in 2 years and wish I'd bought a few shares of Amex today.
Even though I think financials will eventually come up for air. There are just some credit issuers, lenders, and banks that won't survive long enough to catch that life-saving breath.
Why American Express Should Be Ignored
Why American Express Should Be Ignored
Take a look at the Relative Strength Index (RSI) for Visa (V). Comparing it with the S&P, Dow, MasterCard, Discovery, and American Express, you'll find that Visa OUTPERFORMS all of these over a 6 month and year-to-date time line (caveat: MA has surpassed Visa for the last 2 weeks based on RSI).
While this may not be an indicator of who is the "better business", it clearly shows that V clearly outperformes versus the S&P, Dow, and other Credit Cards... a pattern emerges.
Exxon vs. the S&P 500
Having said that.. as someone who has held onto every single share of XOM for the last 4 years... I'm not getting out anytime soon! :)

On a different note, I know people here think Visa bloggers 'drank the kool aid' but there are a few of us who actually understand that ANY stock is a risk, and there is NO stock that is all good news. You need to know about the good and the bad, equally, to be fully informed. Otherwise, it is a cult.
And for those that bought any stock thinking it would put their kids through school, etc, should prepare the kids for home schooling with the market being what it is now.
My Investment Philosophy and Visa
I could not have said it better. I understand that many people follow strageties to the letter, but there should be room for exceptions when all research points to continued growth. We are in the middle of the strangest market I can remember and things are upside-down in terms of rationality, but if we stick with the data to guide our decisions, we have less risk of selling a good stock because of emotion, or because we didn't factor in exceptions to our particular trading strategy. That applies to any good stock. Just my opinion..
Visa: Why I Sold All of My Shares
What's your take on today?
And how do you think all the financial news today (and for a while recently, for that matter) will affect Visa, even though Visa is not a financial?
There just seems to be so many factors coming into play that it gets tough to sort out which ones affect which areas. Just wondering what you all thought..
Visa: Trading Transparency
visaman: thanks for that. you know how much research I do. Perhaps I should just go back to posting up what I do best.. finding and sharing data.
And on that note:
Here's a link to the Webcast of VISA at the UBS Electronic Payments Summit from June 4, 2008. Elizabeth Buse, Global Head of Product for Visa, is the speaker. The audio is approximately 30 minutes long. It updates Visa's stats and other info that we last heard about during the Q2 earnings report.
