Dow Will Equal Gold in 2009

Until this deleveraging is finished gold prices will continue going lower. We have a long way (years) to go until this happens due to rising unemployment.

Skynar it's called a deflationary spiral. Gold will skyrocket after real estate bottoms and banks stop failing. Until then stick to cash and treasuries if you're a conservative investor.

How about a new rule on not assuming you know what someone's invested in. I own gold. But even if I didn't why would I short gold anyway? It holds it's value due to it's flight to safety quality alone. Every time the VIX kicks up so does gold. As soon as the panic dies down so does gold. This time will be no different.

Inflation or Deflation?

I agree with dougnhi in that deflation will be the end result. Ben's printing press works wonders when people can't spend money fast enough hoping to make even more money on the parabolic asset class of the moment. The problem is that the root of our economy is primarily based on consumer perception. You can sense that peoples' attitude towards credit is changing right now. They witness the pain of their overleveraged neighbors and they become even more risk averse. Potential homebuyers now have the "wait until prices drop even more" attitude instead of "buy it quick before it's snatched up by someone else!". This mind-set is at the root of a deflationary environment. When everyone is looking for the best deal possible the demand for credit is severely weakened and no amount of printing presses and helicopters can defeat it once it takes hold.

Many value gurus forget one of the cardinal rules of value investing. Know what you're investing in. If you can't understand the value of the business then you don't invest in it. This is why I invest with David Berkowitz and Fairholme. He's a value investor that sticks to his knitting. He's also beating the averages handily this year. Again.
