  • What if the Credit Crunch Is Just a Symptom?
The problem as I see it is that president Carter and the congressional democrats passed a law that deems rebates of value added taxes to not be an anti-competitive trade practice. Since then, exporting countries like Germany have increased their value added taxes to maximize their mercantilistic exploitation of the USA {20 % value added tax now} . I remember the justification used during the press articles on Carter's proposal as being the alleged necessity to keep western Europe"s income high to diminish the lure Communism had on Europe's working class. Maybe the policy was right while the USSR lived but now it is gone and unfortunately so is much of our working classes income. Time for a real change. We either replace our income tax with a value added tax or we repeal Carter,s exemption for their value added tax rebates in considering whether to impose trade sanctions. By way have our labor union economists had their heads up their rears since Carter,s policy was implemented?

few have capital gains on recent purchases, but some have long term gains that they could sell if rates stay low thereby freeing up funds for investments or discretionary purchases they would not otherwise make.

  • The Biggest Bubble of Them All
how come the predatory mercantilist policies of our socialist trading partners are seldom criticized by our leftists? For example-rebate of value added taxes to exporters of goods to the USA. what is wrong with the culture of the left that they ignore the damage done by many hundreds of billions in trade deficits per year?

re punishing mercantilists i would like to add that less trade even no trade is better than running 800 billion dollar a year trade deficits ; the end result of which is inevitable national bankruptcy.

  • The Real Cause: Current Account Deficit
another way of looking at the trade deficit is that the usa does not require those that sell to us to buy an equivalent amount from us. obviously some of our trading partners do not deserve to be called partners since they are practicing what amounts to a beggar thy neighbor policy towards the usa. tariffs that are adjustable to the trade balance with each exporter to the usa is one way to punish mercantilism and to reward fair traders.

  • Bubble Also Caused by Neomercantlists
we should force countries that export to us to buy goods and services roughly equal in dollar value to what we buy from them. a sliding scale tariff would be a good start. bush 41 made Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Japan pay a total of over 50 billion dollars of our costs for the first gulf war. that should be our standard procedure whenever we are asked to defend rich nations or their interests.
