  • Turning Nothing Into Something
Wow, some really strong and poignant comments all spurned from a discussion focusing on instilling positive feelings for 2009. These comments show how negative and spiteful a state of mind our country and globe are in. We should take a step back and realize how lucky we all are to have the things that we do, most of the world is in a much worse spot than we are, this still is a really good place to live and call home.

Google should be a great stock pick for the next 3-5 years. With Yahoo out of the picture and no real competition in the market they should reap the rewards.

Also take a look at Buffalo Wild Wings. This is a Francorp Client from the 90's that has continued to perform very well. Short term, who knows with the economy and disposable income, but still a great company and should be a great stock.

You can never go wrong with MCD. This is one of the most time tested investments you can ever bet on. They have utilized franchising more effectively than any other company in the history of franchise expansion.

Good questions and points Mystery28. I would argue the point that there are not very many franchised public companies on the market. Francorp has worked with many companies to utilize franchising as a way to take a company into the public market as well as worked with already current public companies to revitalize a franchise organization and brand. The fact is that franchise organizations will have a very strong valuation in most cases simply because they have used franchising as a way to leverage a good thing...whether it be the business model, the brand equity or something else. The problem with company owned or debt financed growth is that it by nature is very capital intensive. Francorp has built thousands of successful companies through leveraging the capital requirements out to the franchisees. It seems that over the past few years I have seen and heard this more often. I know that I have been the customer on more than one occasion at a Starbucks when the service was very poor. Either the product was made incorrectly or the way I was treated just was not in line with what has made Starbucks successful. It has been proven time and time again with the work at Francorp that operations with an owner operator present in the location outperform company owned operations with hired management in the location. You are correct, Starbucks has never franchised and probably never will....although recently they did put together a master license arrangement with a european business contingent. But that being said, my point would be that if some or many of those units were franchised, the leases and debt financing would be relaxed from a corporate perspective, the individual franchisees would take some of that burden from the corporate infrastructure. It also would give the operators more "buy in" to the operation itself. I would bet that with the same Starbucks operations they have had to close now, some of those could be kept open profitably in the franchise model. Francorp has worked with many companies in similar situations where they have actually franchised company units to get to a more efficient level of profitability.

  • Google Breaks Down
The fact is that Google still controls the Internet Ad Spend. More and more companies will be looking to get more from their ad dollars. In most businesses today the most effective spend is on the Internet. Google isn't going anywhere.

  • New Rules for Chinese Stock Market Investors
A must read for all international investors is "The World is Flat". My firm, Francorp is a global company, we work in over 40 countries around the world. One of the things we have to get used to is that each day there are less and less "developing" areas of the world where businesses and people can exploit a immature market. In today's economy we have to be prepared to compete on a global scale or your business stands to be taken out in a global marketplace.

  • Panera Bread Ready to Rise
My Firm works with a lot of growing franchises and specifically food franchises. We have never liked the store layouts or design of the locations that Panera uses. That being said they have taken over the fast casual niche that suburbians seem to love. I agree with the last comment though that food prices will kill a model like Panera's.
