  • Is Commercial Real Estate the Next to Decline?
The way money flows in and out of these ETFs is nuts. I initiated a position in SRS (an inverse ETF) today and it rose right along with the market! Turns out the market price gained 4.5% on the day while the NAV price was negative 9%!! That tells me a lot of folks are thinking the same thing re: further losses in real estate and the trade's likely to get crowded real quick. It's also going to be extremely volatile. All about the stop loss on this one.

  • Is Commercial Real Estate the Next to Decline?
Considering going long IGR for the discount and dividend while hedging with SRS. Any thoughts?

  • As Good as Gold?
Not to mention the fact that TIPS come with the risk of default by the US government. It's time to think the unthinkable.

  • Fannie, Freddie Headed for Conservatorship
palsboss, I've read that a significant number of calls were purchased on the XLF (insiders?) in anticipation of monday morning, so someone in the know must believe the bailout will be received as a positive. It's all about perception and make-believe at this point.

  • Inequality and the Credit Crisis
Two thoughts: The wage-price spiral may simply be a matter of time if my workplace is any indication. My co-workers are foaming at the wallets for raises. You'd think with the slack in the labor market this wouldn't be an issue for my boss, but in more specialized fields it just might be.

Second, revolution may not come in the form of torches and pitchforks but in mass default on debt obligations. Watch for this trend to develop as low to mid income earners start to wake up to inflation and usury.

  • What's Next for the U.S. Dollar?
Forex trader here, with a different point of view. There's another camp (myself included) that believes central banks are going into neutral mode as they wait and hope and pray for inflation to moderate. Attention will be directed away from interest rate differentials to the US's staggering twin deficits. Other economies may also be slowing, but STRUCTURALLY, the dollar is on very thin ice.

  • A Closer Look at the Dollar Rally
We ought to consider the possibility that we're witnessing intervention on the dollar. There wouldn't necessarily be an open acknowledgement of this by the treasury; I've always assumed it would be done on the sly to ensure the illusion of a major shift in psychology in the hopes that the dollar bullishness would be contagious. Needless to say, next week is going to be critical to the dollar's future.

  • Historic Financial Collapse Underway?
Sensetti, you need to turn off Fox News and listen to the first hand accounts of US military personnel from Iraq Veterans Against the War -

Like the economy, even our "mighty military" has a breaking point.

  • Defining Alternative Asset Classes
RYFOX is an interesting mutual fund to consider. It combines commodity futures (long and short), currencies, hedging/real return and real estate all in one fund. The mix is adjusted depending on market conditions.

  • Smells Good: The Case for Natural Gas
As a flaming liberal addicted to conservative talk radio, I find it interesting when clowns like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh rant about drilling in America as the solution for all our energy problems while simultaneously raving about socialism. Aren't they suggesting nationalization of the oil companies? They must be if they assume the drillers wouldn't sell their oil to the highest bidder (China comes to mind). I mean, that's the way capitalism works, right? We can't have it both ways people.

  • What's Keeping the Dollar Down?
I wish more people understood what was really going on with the dollar (as you've excellently explained). There are serious structural problems with the buck that go far beyond our trade balance and other money flow indicators. Ultimately, it's all about debt.

Would you lend money to a chronically broke friend?

Don't be fooled by the dollar's recent rally. It's ridiculous to think that talking the dollar up, as Bernanke and Paulson have attempted to do, will make a lasting difference. Until we make sweeping changes to government and economy, the currency will remain under pressure.

  • Frontier Markets ETF: Curb Your Enthusiasm
My advice is to wait for the new Powershares MENA ETF which invests in the Middle East and North Africa. With all those petro dollars sloshing around, it's destined to outperform.
