Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

Wednesday, October 15.Bullish Calls:Continental Resources (CLR) -- "This is a remarkable decline. All of the high quality ones are down so much, I can't go against it. This is where you pull the trigger.
3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

Detroit's Biggest Failure: Losing the Youth Market
M& A, international growth, etc.
I'm guessing the list won't be very long. Or it may not even be a list. And therein lies the reality of making the Big 3 viable, as their foreign competitors aren't standing still...........
IMHO
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
All the financial experts were on Kudlow last night, even ex-Fed Governors, and they agree..............yet this practice of descimating assets values is kept in tact.................o... purpose???????????
Almost Nothing Positive to Say About the Auto Industry
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery................. but seems to be resisted "at all costs" when the "players" have a different AGENDA!!!!!!!!
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
When America gets a real leader who gets things done, he/she is attacked as the problem. Americans don't deserve honest, results oriented leaders, as they show what they do to them...........
America.........the country of the ENTITLED, UNDER-EDUCATED, DISHONEST, IMMORAL, POLARIZED, and FINANCIALLY STRAPPED.........
What a wonderful future we have created for future generations??????
PATHETIC!!!!!!!
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
I don't think there are enough printing presses, and currency quality paper, to cover all the lies we have been getting from our Business leaders & Politicians the past few years??????????
Glen Beck commented last week on his radio show "We won't recognize America this time next year", and I'm understanding maybe what he sees that we don't realize just yet........
SAD............VERY SAD!!!!!!!!!
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
UAW REFUSED!!!!!!
ANY competitive wage target, ANYTIME in 2009??????? NO! NO! NO!
Would that be PETULENCE????? OBSTINANCE?????? .........................
RUSSIAN ROULETTE??????????
This type of intransigence has obviously worked with the weak kneed auto execs............will it work now????????????
Let's Hope the Auto Bailout Has Failed for Good
And the financial market collapses????? Investors actually want a 3 month bandaid --vs-- a real solution??????? I don't think so, but with the help of the hysterical financial media, some very cheap shares of FORD will be bought today by savvy investors with long pants!!!!!!!!
IMHO
TARP, the Sequel: Auto Bailout
Congressmen talk about the "taxpayers" as though we are something important, or relevant to them. Kinda like every Pro sports franchise tells us , "You're the greatest FANS in the world", as we PAY, PAY, PAY!!!!!!!
Government BY THE PEOPLE, OF THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE........ What country are they referring to???????????
Detroit's Bailout Invites Competitive Response from Abroad
The GRAVE is dug, and it's only a matter of TIME & MONEY before the dirt is shoveled over the coffins. It is quite apparent that the UAW doesn't get it, and Exec's continue to display small gonnies! Dems in Congress are behoden to the Unions for over $450M in 2008 campaign financing......$53MM by the UAW. Their scare tactics of catastrophic consequences from a pre-packaged CH11 reorganization is BOGUS.
Senator Corker has it exactly right, yet he is largely ignored as an annoying knat in Congress. UNLESS, and until the DEBT, LABOR and LEGACY COSTS are realigned, there is absolutely no way these companies can exist!
I challenge anyone to explain how the cost of a REAL REORG will cost more than $125BB, which is where we are headed under the current legislation-----and the DIRT WILL STILL COVER THE COFFINS ......... only a few years later............
Business as usual in DC!!!!!!!!!
IMHO
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
Auto makers get their lifeline from Republicans to Democratic administrations. Pure politics folks..........nothing more! Bush agrees so there is NO CH 11 on his watch..........His history has enough negatives?
Cash burn will change little in the current drafts, unless the Jobs Bank is dismantled NOW, 2010 UAW agreement implemented NOW, Debt-to-Equity swap NOW, Unfunded liabilities swapped to 50% equity NOW, Plant closures W/O Job Buyouts AGREED NOW, Dealerships closed en masse W/O PENALTIES NOW, White collar salary REDUCTION 25% NOW, SG&A CUT 20% NOW, etc, etc................
Get my drift????? I guess the Congress & Bush Administration believe that if they could PULL-THE-TARP over taxpayers, an Auto Bailout Bridge "TO NOWHERE" will be a slam dunk!!!!!!!!!!
IMHO
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
[1] JOBS BANK "must end" by 3-31-09;
[2] UAW 2010 AGREEMENT " must" be FAST FORWARDED to 3/31-09;
[3] GM dealership agreements need to be rewritten;
[4] Work Rules "known" to be non-productive eliminated -- NOW!!!!!!!
[5] All management salaries "reduced" 25% -- NO BONUS' -- HIRING FREEZE;
[6] Engineering & Quality Control REVAMPED;
[7] Reinstitute FLEET LEASING & RENTAL CAR dist to move units;
[8] Eliminate all sponsorship events --NOW!!!!!!!!
[9] Replace all travel with Video Conferencing -- Conference calls -- tech;
[10] Get rid of "at least" one level of VP's & Managements;
[11] Cancel all corporate sponsored employee rewards events;
****** B-O-D's must be supplemented by Jack Welsh types!!!!!!!!!!!!
Replace POLITICS with GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICES ---- NOW!!!!!!!
IMHO
Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
[1] Rescind Mark-to-Market accounting;
[2] Rescind Sarbanes/Oxley;
[3] Reinstate UPTICK RULE by SEC;
NONE OF THESE COSTS A DIME!!!!!!!!!!
But why do them CONGRESS IS SPENDING their way out of this mess...... Isn't that what CONGRESS' DO??????? Hey, Congress acts as though they have money.........too ignorant to even know that AMERICA IS BANKRUPT!!!!!!!!!!
Being a MILLIONAIRE once meant something--a significant amount of money symbolizing wealth and success. NOW, being a BILLIONAIRE has replaced the peasants who only have a million. Heck, TRILLIONS is the new amount designate for REAL MONEY ------ IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!
After all, America is the strongest, richest, smartest, well educated, most productive, innovative, ethical and moral country in the history of the world.......... AREN'T WE?????????
That's what we keep getting told............
Detroit Calling Washington's Bluff
The taxpayers were duped by TReasury & Fed for over $700BB, so why wouldn't we expect to continue to be the object of our leaders disdain????
It's called THE MUSHROOM THEORY-----ALIVE & WELL IN CONGRESS!!!!!
IMHO
'Big Three' Auto Makers Looking to Lose Weight
Try going into a bank for a mortgage and telling the loan officer: I am going to improve my skills so I can demand a higher salary; I promise to destroy my credit cards; I won't eat out at restuarants anymore; No more unnecessary clothes and video games and cell phones, etc. No more travel and vacations for 3 years; yadda yadda yadda.............. Just give me the money!
The only problem, the wife and children who make the spending decisions [UNIONS] aren't at the meeting at the bank, and never agreed to anything. NOBODY IS GOING TO MAKE THEM CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!
ANALOGY????????
Buy, Sell or Hold: GM's Too-Big-to-Fail Myth
If I were the Chairman of the Congressional conference, I would arrange to ask the first question about the UAW's participation. Given the honest answer, I would immediately ADJOURN THE MEETING...........
IMHO
