Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

Wednesday, October 15.Bullish Calls:Continental Resources (CLR) -- "This is a remarkable decline. All of the high quality ones are down so much, I can't go against it. This is where you pull the trigger.
3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

The T. Boone Pickens Approach
Huh? How about this?
The REAL inconvenient truth: going forward, OPEC will continue to rob us blind by setting oil prices at ANY LEVEL THEY DESIRE.

'Best of Breed' Business Model a Chink in Apple’s Armor?
Save yourself from Windows regret. Find a friend or a switcher and ask them, "How's it going?"
You might see a reason to go w/ the Mac.
Good luck, whatever your choice...

Goldman Raises Apple's Price Target on 3G iPhone Launch
This summer Apple will ship the PocketMac to the planet, with only China, Japan, Russia, and Korea still unannounced. I've heard that Apple and the telecoms will charge the same or less for the new 3G product. Admittedly, many customers will stay loyal to the BlackBerry, but I don't see any great loyalty to any other brand.
So, let's see what might happen in shipments, given multiple PocketMac models:
2009 - 40M shipped
2010 - 100M
2011- 150M
I think Apple will do ok.
The Case for Not Drilling ANWR
Where would we be if Cheney and his oil brethren had foreseen the approach of Peak Oil and skyrocketing pricing?
Where we would be if they had historically embarked on a policy of energy independence?
Where we would be if they had committed us to accelerating alternative energy sources: solar, wind, nuclear, wave, and hydro?
The Cheney Oil strategy was directed at private profits and megalomania; we even started a war to forward the strategy.
It is small compensation, indeed, that Cheney and Bush will earn the honor of being known as the most destructive and failure ridden presidency in US history.
Goldman Raises Apple's Price Target on 3G iPhone Launch
Also, the other reports has the iPhone potential subscriber basis increasing four-fold in the neighborhood of 600M potential customers.
Based on these numbers, others have predicted iPhone sales of 14M in 2008 and 25M and above in 2009.
Apple's iPhone: Home Court Advantage

Apple: Taking Some Chips Off the Table at Current Prices
You're right on the money. Apple is unassailably beastly. It's a carrier fleet, full speed ahead to the next conquest.
The others: In drydock, building destroyers.
Apple's fleet:
- dominant retail (both brick and mortar and website),
- world's best OS and SDKs unified in Macs/iPhones
- world's best user experience and service support
- dominant music store, soon to be dominant movie/TV store
- soon-to-be-dominant mobile app titles
- huge cash hoard (bigger than msft in % terms)
- world's best leadership/vision and technical/design brilliance
- world's best marketing insight
- exploding stk price leading to huge talent advantage: talent wants to work for Apple because of the increasing value of their options AND the disciplined way they are managed/led
- world's best innovation engine
Get the picture? Why would anyone distract themselves by trading this perma-growth stock? Timing a perma-growth is a fool's game, just let the good times roll!

How Microsoft Could Kill Google on the Web
Free means msft becomes a new socialist regime: Who will run the ad acceptance dept? The free mkt (Google) is perfectly matched to the job of choosing the ads that run.
Google has patented a great ad auction system. They have millions of servers to speed search queries to the universe. And, FWIW, Google appears to be an ingenious engineering company w/ attention to public opinion. People don't have a problem bringing their business to Google ("Don't be evil." works!).
Msft is a convicted monopolist with a long folk history of thuggery and malodorous conduct. There are many in the population who have a problem with helping msft succeed (C'est moi, for instance.).
So, if msft is going to compete here, I say they just need to get back to their labs and build a better mouse trap (and that, my friend, is something they haven't done in many years (See the msft 5 year charts.)).

It's Now 'Official': Ethanol Is a Scam
Being optimistic, maybe our political leaders will take this lesson to heart and notice the impact of the next lobbyist driven policy initiative.
Also, being optimistic, maybe this is the price we pay, as a country, when the leadership at the top is woefully not close to being up to the job AND maybe, whoever comes next, John, Hillary, or Barack, will return us to a government based on reason, goodwill, competence and integrity.
Our 8 year long experiment in 'faith based' leadership is soon, thankfully, coming to an inglorious end.
Why Is Progressive Interested in Auto Fuel Efficiency?
Huh, maybe Progressive is seeing the 'light'!
Also, it doesn't hurt their public image. After all, the name is 'Progressive'.
